The Regiment was raised in 1807 and at first was known as the Chevau-Legers du Grand-Due de Berg (The Grand Duke of Berg's Light Horse), the Grand Duke being, of course, Murat. In 1808 the title was changed to Chasseurs a cheval (Light Cavalry). At the end of 1809 the Regiment was armed with the lance and took the name Landers du Grand-Duche de Berg
